Laura Really Loves Typing (plus, the Park)

She types a few letters, moves the mouse, types a few more letters. It's really funny to watch her mimicking us.

We went to the park today with the FCS Junior High. They played flag football and dodge ball, among other games, and had a cook out. These are some of my favorite photos of Laura enjoying the day. Also, the two of us went to the play ground and played with some 2 year olds and a dog. I didn't get photos of that, however. Darn.

There was a lot more, but she hit some command that deleted it all.

Here is Laura learning how to play golf (Daddy's favorite game.)

Firsts

Keith would like me to inform you all that Laura used a fork to eat all of her mashed potatoes all by herself for the first time. This is significant, because she normally takes a bite or two of her food using her fork, then abandons it to use her hands for the rest of the food. That was Saturday.

Speaking of food, she decided she doesn't like crust. She'll peel all the crust off of her sandwich before eating the "insides." Picky. At the age of 16.5 months.

She also caught a ball all by herself, standing up, for the first time. She's been able to catch balls rolled to her, while sitting down, for some time now. But she is now catching them when they are thrown to her. That was Tuesday.

Naps...

Laura had decided about a month ago that she didn't need two naps a day anymore. She would play all during her morning nap, until she'd had enough of sitting in her crib and throwing toys over side, then she'd scream for me to come get her for lunch. This, of course, made her very, very fussy in the evenings. After last night at church, however, this is going to stop. I laid her down at her old nap time and ignored her for two hours. Then, I got her up when I want her to normally wake up. I have conceded a little in that I've made her nap times a bit shorter. But still. It was getting ridiculous. We'll see by Sunday how going back to a strict schedule works.

Can you tell I have a head-strong daughter?

You do know I have a genius for a daughter, right?

Some people say that if your child isn't speaking by 18 months, then they are retarded. Or some such foolishness as that. In both mine and Keith's families, however, it seems that the later you talk in life, the smarter you end up being. There are many stories in both our families of children who didn't say a word other than "dadadadadada" until they were well over two years old. Almost invariably, they begin speaking in complete sentences and even a couple of them could read before they decided to talk. I have no doubt that Laura will fall into this family category. She obviously recognizes the majority of words that I say. But even when I know she can make all the sounds necessary to say a word (such as "uh" and "peh"), she refuses to put the words together when I try to coach her. She'll start saying some other unrelated sound instead. Since she was only two months old, she has carefully watched people's lips when they are talking to her. Then, she mimics the movement, without any sound. She's smart. Very smart. But she won't talk other than "dadadada" and "mamamama."

This week, she's begun to show me how well she associates things together to make a group. On Monday, she was sitting on the floor next to her bookshelf, flipping through books. She pulled the book Where is Jesus? by Sharilyn S. Adair and Sheila K. Hewitt off the shelf and looked at the cover a moment. Then, she pointed at the donkey on the front of the cover and said, "Eh." Then, she immediately pulled Barron's Feels Real! Little ponies off the shelf and pointed at the pony on the front and said, "Eh." I said, "That's right. That's a horse. That's a horse." We spent half an hour finding all of the horses (or, at least members of the horse family) in each of her books. Including zebras. I only had to point one out that she'd missed once.

Today, she started pointing at my shirt (It's the Tanzanian one with lots of patterns of black, white, pink, turquoise, green, yellow, and orange.) and I started naming all of the colors as she pointed to them. After a few minutes of naming different colors, she began pointing out all of the orange things. "Orange. Orange. Orange. Orange." Finally, I said, "There's orange on your shirt too." She immediately looked down at her own shirt, and started pointing to each of the orange flowers on her shirt. I'm telling you, I have a genius on my hands.

Keith gave Laura the ps3 controller while he was in a first-shooter game the other day. She figured out which button makes him jump. And which button throws the grenade. Keith said she held the controller the way you're supposed to. She pushed the buttons with her thumbs. She watched the tv intently while controlling the character. Problem is, now she thinks the controllers are in-limits now. I can't keep them away from her.

Today, she had a conversation with my dear friend, Erikah.

This first video is from Christmas time when we saw Mrs. Sarah and Dantre. Oh, and Pam too.

This second video is from last week. Since Laura's been a bit under the weather with her ear infection, she hasn't wanted to eat much. So, she took to feeding everyone else the food I would make for her. Uncle Paul had fun with this.

I got this survey from some mom friends on facebook. But I figured it was appropriate for this site. All you ever wanted to know about Laura's birth.

1. WAS YOUR PREGNANCY PLANNED?
No.

2. WERE YOU MARRIED AT THE TIME?
Yes.

3. WHAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS?
I was very excited.

4. WAS ABORTION AN OPTION FOR YOU?
No Way!!! Abortion is MURDER!!!

5. HOW OLD WERE YOU?
I was 24 when we got pregnant and 25 when she was born.

6. HOW DID YOU FIND OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT?
I became incredibly ill from baking cookies, so I bought a test.

7. WHO DID YOU TELL FIRST?
Keith was home for lunch, so he got to see the test when I did.

8. DID YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE SEX?
YES!

9. DUE DATE?
November 14, 2007 (This is my father-in-law's birthday, so it was easy to remember the due date.)

10. DID YOU HAVE MORNING SICKNESS?
I lost almost 30 pounds my first trimester from throwing up EVERY time I ate or smelled some food.

11. WHAT DID YOU CRAVE?
Taco Bell. Which is really strange because I normally hate it.

12. WHAT IRRITATED YOU?
The acid reflux/heartburn that was causing my morning sickness.

13. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CHILD'S SEX?
Girl.

14. DID YOU WISH YOU HAD THE OPPOSITE SEX OF WHAT YOU WERE GETTING?
No, I couldn't imagine things any different than they are.

15. HOW MANY POUNDS DID YOU GAIN DURING PREGNANCY?
I gained 25 pounds total. But if you factor in the 30 I lost first... 55. Ick. I can't do that the next time.

16. DID YOU HAVE A BABY SHOWER?
Three, actually. And they were all really fun.

17. WAS IT A SURPRISE OR DID YOU KNOW?
I informed the planners what dates and times I wanted the parties to be, and they did the rest.

18. DID YOU HAVE ANY COMPLICATIONS DURING YOUR PREGNANCY?
Other than the four month acid reflux? No. Just during the labor.

19. WHERE DID YOU GIVE BIRTH?
Washington Regional Medical Center.

20. HOW MANY HOURS WERE YOU IN LABOR?
19 hours and 27 min. I think. I don't know the exact time I woke up in the night, just that it was around 3 am.

21. WHO DROVE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL?
A very sleepy Keith. We spent the first four hours of labor laying in the hospital bed together, watching Sergeant York and HGTV, waiting for a doctor to show up.

22. WHO WATCHED YOU GIVE BIRTH?
Keith and the dozen or so hospital personel.

23. WAS IT NATURAL OR C-SECTION?
Emergency cesarean. Laura was three weeks early, but I was leaking fluid at a rapid rate, so she had to come.

24. DID YOU TAKE MEDICINE TO EASE THE PAIN.
Yes. Around 3 pm (12 hours of beginning labor), I had a epidural. But also, all day I'd been on Pitocin.

25. HOW MUCH DID YOUR CHILD WEIGH?

28. WHEN WAS YOUR CHILD ACTUALLY BORN?
October 19, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Today, Laura got her first hair cut. She didn't want to sit too still for me until I told her I was making her hair pretty. She was quite willing then to do whatever I told her to. She also got another mani/pedi today. Keith watched in amazement because she sat so still for me.

On another subject, I finally downloaded all of my pictures from Christmas (all the pictures in the other post were sent to me by others.) Enjoy this new set.

Laura enjoying her new playhouse.

Laura playing with her Uncle Paul.

Laura was very excited to get a dishes set for Christmas.

Miserable

Laura is absolutely miserable right now. She's got double conjuntivitis. I believe that's what it's called. Basically, it's an infection in both ears and both eyes. Yay. This is after I began giving her daily Zyrtec so that her allergies wouldn't ever get really bad. But they still did. My parents gave us a Vicks vaporizer, so at least she's getting medicine while she sleeps (in addition to the antibiotics and Tylenol).

I have a friend that says that all toddlers between the ages of 12 months and 24 months are sick constantly. That it's just natural for them to be at the doctors every week. That no one ever sees the parents of children that age. If she's right, I've got ten more months of missing church due to a sick baby. :-(

In other news, Laura loves cuddling and sleeping on Mommy's chest. Oh, wait, that's because she's sick. Never mind.
